Generative AI feels magical. Emails write themselves. Proposals appear in seconds. Sales decks sparkle. Marketing copy multiplies. Everyone looks productive. Leadership smiles. Budgets loosen. Then something goes wrong.


A recruiter uses AI in a hiring workflow and violates California and New York AI laws. A salesperson pastes confidential data into a chatbot. A marketer publishes content that sounds confident and is completely wrong. Security investigates. Legal panics. Someone asks, “Do we have an AI policy?” Of course you do. MIT reports that 95 percent of GenAI projects fail. Not because the technology is bad, but because organizations misunderstand risk and readiness factors. Most importantly, they misunderstand the human factors.


The Real Risk Isn’t About the Model…or the Policy


Let’s be blunt. Most GenAI readiness efforts fail before they start. Why? Because they focus on tools. They audit platforms and document processes but ignore behavior. Gartner and Forrester both estimate that 90 percent of security incidents stem from human error. That includes GenAI incidents. Shadow AI, over trust, bad prompting, data leakage. Need I go on? Okay I will. Hallucinations taken as fact that cause brand damage. Is this a policy, technology, or training problem? Maybe, but more likely it’s a people problem. Stress causes shortcuts, trust causes overreliance, and pressure causes misuse.


Here’s the uncomfortable truth: Frameworks like NIST AI RMF and ISO 42001 assume humans behave rationally. Unfortunately, they rarely do. Neuroscientists agree that over 90% of decision making is emotional and not logical, and is easily impacted by stress and trust issues.


Most assessments stop at technology, policies, and governance. They rarely measure:


  • Trust factors (if my oxytocin is low, I don’t care if I leak IP)

  • Stress levels (High cortisol? Yeah, I’m gonna misuse AI)

  • Soft skill gaps (if you can’t communicate, you can’t prompt)

  • Prompting maturity (bad in equals bad out)

  • Storytelling abilities for sales and marketing teams

  • Decision making and mistakes under pressure


That’s how organizations end up “compliant on paper” and exposed in reality.

The Organizations That Win in 2026


Here’s the good news. You’re not too late. Here’s the bad news: you soon will be. The organizations that succeed with GenAI in 2026 won’t be the ones with the most detailed or restrictive policies. They’ll be the ones who measured human risk early and trained people accordingly.


A real Generative AI Risk and Readiness Assessment should answer questions like:


  • Where are employees using AI without authorization?

  • Which roles are most likely to misuse GenAI under pressure?

  • How do trust and stress factors affect decision quality?

  • Do our teams understand and use secure or proper prompting?

  • How can sales and marketing teams use AI to tell effective stories?

  • Does our training extend beyond GenAI into leadership and soft skills?

  • How will CA or NY AI laws impact our risk posture?
